Pediatric COTA jobs, such as pediatric occupational therapy assistants, involve working with children with physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities to develop everyday skills which create a sense of independence as much as possible. It is a rewarding and challenging career that helps children into their daily routines and brings them joy.
What is a Pediatric COTA?
Pediatric COTA stands for pediatric certified occupational therapy assistant. As a pediatric certified occupational therapy assistant your job is to provide occupational therapy services to children who are born with impairments or require rehabilitative therapy. These services include, but are not limited to:
- Prepping treatment areas
- Cleaning the treatment areas
- Transporting patients
- Clerical duties such as answering phone calls and scheduling appointments
- Help children with motor skills and behavior and form helpful habits to support independence
These duties are not completed alone, however. Pediatric COTAs work directly under a supervisor, an OT or occupational therapist, who will help develop the care plans for the client, give feedback on treatment, and manage the patient’s records and insurance.
How to Become a Pediatric COTA
Pediatric COTA job requirements vary from position to position, but the basic skills and certifications include:
- An associate’s degree, preferably in Occupational Therapy or a related field
- A completed internship
- State license – requirements for this are different in each state. They typically require passing an exam and passing continuing education courses
- Background Check
- Driver’s License and proof of insurance (as the job requires a lot of travel)
Aside from the basic requirements, other important skill sets to have are strong communication skills, attention to details, flexibility both in mindset and schedule, and of course, a passion to work with children.
How Much Does a Pediatric COTA make?
A pediatric certified occupational therapy assistant’s salary varies based on experience, company, and state. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the range of salary is from $43,180 on the lower end to $84,090 on the higher end as of May 2020.
